Often in kindergarten classrooms students are encouraged to use inventive spelling, it may not be accurate but they are getting their ideas out. Do we want to encourage children to write? Of course, but we must as educators, parents, and tutors correct their spelling errors. Otherwise spelling errors will keep happening. In math if a child writes that 4 + 4 = 9 do we let that slide? No, we tell and show them that 4 + 4 = 8. It’s the same with spelling. You can do this while still maintaining a child’s dignity and willingness to write. Let them write all their wonderful ideas out on a dry eraser or paper first. Then let them know one at a time their spelling errors. So if they write stiff as stif, tell them, this is actually a two letter spelling for /f/. Have them erase their spelling and write the correct spelling. If students write was as wuz tell them that this is your spelling for /u/ and write an a above so they can erase and write the correct spelling, and s is your /z/ spelling. Kids actually want to know the correct spelling so have the last thing they read be the correct spelling! Something that will help your child spell more accurately is to have them say each sound as they write. All the time!
